Epilepsy Care Coordination
University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute
2022
Jen engaged and collaborated in human-centered design (HCD) initiative. We started with identifying the people/stakeholders who play a role and/or impact the patient experience as it relates to managing the complicated and complex condition of epilepsy. Through curating evidence and harnessing the inherent innovation of individuals representing the ecosystem, designers identified over 100 strategies. We clustered and developed descriptions for approaches, and then designers voted on top strategies based on criteria.
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT SYSTEMS
Western New York Early Childhood Development Collaborative Innovations Network
2017–2018
Jen collaborated with early development community leaders in western New York to implement HCD change focused on the needs of patients and primary care providers. This approach has inspired, motivated, and aligned parents, community leaders, and health and support-service providers, culminating in key features and a narrowed set of interventions to improve early development systems across two counties. One solution included the development of a centralized referral repository to provide concise, cross-organization reporting of referral status to all parents and providers.
IMPROVING RENAL OUTCOMES COLLABORATIVE (IROC)
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence
2015–2016
IROC is a convener of collaborative clinical care networks to design, optimize and evaluate health care delivery, patient self-management, patient experience, and disease outcomes through idealized design, and implementation methodologies and research. Jen and Justin Masterson (“Resident Affable Skeptic & Connector of Thoughts” at a Cincinnati-based product design company and parent of a child with special health care needs) engaged with network leaders to oversee a nine-month design phase, culminating in a set of intervention packages.
TYPE I DIABETES (T1D) COLLABORATIVE
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence
2014–2015
Jen engaged in a nine-month HCD phase to improve system and patient outcomes for this complex disease. Jen, Justin Masterson and Amy Ohmer played key roles in the engagement, which included development of an online software idea platform, virtual community engagement workgroups, and two face-to-face sessions with designers representing nine specialty care networks. The design phase culminated in a set of intervention packages that have been tested and implemented through the T1D Exchange.
